Story notes
These are Akshu's planning notes for the series. They contain spoilers, so read the chapters first.
The big idea
Start small. Do not begin with the huge truth about the universe. Begin with one ritual, one city and one war, and let the bigger secrets show up slowly.
The Covenant
- Every 12 years, seven people are marked with a sigil that burns into their chest. They are called Bearers.
- Each Bearer can summon one Manifestation. A Manifestation is not a dead hero or a myth. It is a possible version of the Bearer, a person they could become under different circumstances.
- Seven Bearers, seven Manifestations. The last pair standing wins the Covenant.
- The prize is the right to rewrite one event. Nobody knows the cost, and nobody knows who enforces it. The previous winner vanished.
Main character
Kael Ardent, 17. Lives alone in a workshop after a mysterious fire killed his father. He does not know his father was part of the previous Covenant.
His Manifestation is Ember: armored, scarred, cold, tactical. Ember wants to fight. Kael does not.
The other Bearers (Book 1)
| Bearer | Their Manifestation |
|---|---|
| The Noble Heir | A saint version of herself |
| The Street Thief | A chaotic assassin self |
| The Idol Influencer | A battle-tactician general |
| The Priest | A corrupted, fallen self |
| The Prodigy Mage | A child-genius version |
| The Amnesiac | A silent, masked monster |
Power system
Each Bearer has a Core Trait, a dominant part of their personality. Kael's is Preservation, the Heir's is Order, the Thief's is Freedom.
There are no XP bars and no stat windows. Manifestations evolve because of emotional choices, which keeps it dramatic instead of gamey.
Book 1 structure
- Act 1: the accidental summoning, the rules of the Covenant, the first fight, and Kael learning that Manifestations are not mindless servants.
- Act 2: alliances, betrayals, tactical battles, discovering sigil abilities, and Kael partly seeing Ember's memories.
- Act 3: a city-wide catastrophe, one Bearer trying to force an early rewrite, and the final fight between Kael and the Noble Heir.
- Ending: Kael wins and is offered the rewrite. He refuses. Ember is horrified: "You just doomed this version." The Covenant collapses and the sky fractures.
The series
- Book 1: The Ember Covenant is the Refusal route.
- Book 2: Ashen Resolve is the darker route. Kael trusts Ember completely, different people die, and the book ends with Kael accepting the rewrite. The world resets, but a small crack stays in the sky.
- Book 3: Iron Bloom follows the Noble Heir. She summoned on purpose. She wins, and her rewrite creates a distortion nobody can name yet.
Quiet seeds to plant
- Ember sometimes mentions things that did not happen in this timeline.
- Sigils flicker during strong emotions.
- A mysterious observer who never fights.
- Manifestations sometimes talk as if they remember other versions of themselves.
Big question to decide
Should the Manifestations be (1) independent personalities, (2) slowly merging with their Bearer, (3) competing for control, or (4) hiding secret motives? This choice shapes the whole series.
